Raglan/Whāingaroa Beachcare Group

Coastcare work in Whāingaroa first started at Kākāriki Beach (north of Wainamu Beach), which was severely eroded in the early 2000s. A healthy spinifex dune system has been re-established at Kākāriki Beach, however, some parts of the Whāingaroa coast are still quite degraded and will be the focus of efforts in the years to come. With support from Waikato District Council, the beach accessways have been improved over the years to minimise trampling of native plant species, but the huge numbers of summer visitors continue to threaten dune systems at some sites, particularly along Ngarunui Beach. The restoration of the Whāingaroa coastline is a collaboration between Waikato Regional Council, Waikato District Council, Tainui hapū and the Whāingaroa ki te Whenua Trust. Plantings are undertaken with keen members of the community, local schools, university students and occasionally corporate groups.
