Piha Coastcare Trust
Piha Coastcare Trust
Location of main site: Piha Beach, Piha Coastal village and adjacent Waitakere Ranges area.
Date started: March 2003
Purpose of group: To facilitate projects that:
- restore, enhance and protect the natural environment and public space of Piha,
- encourage local involvement in environmental issues; and,
- work in partnership with the relevant local bodies to further the best environmental outcomes in the Piha coastal environment.
About the group: First formed as an environmental group, we became a Trust in 2009. The group of seven Trustees works closely with the local Council and has had an emphasis on the restoration of dunes in the difficult West Coast environment, where human intervention at one of NZ’s most famous surf beaches has lead to much dune degradation. The Trust also works to reduce weeds and encourages native planting. Work days organised by the Trust get good community support. Education and information to the community is also provided.
