Carters Beach Reserve
Carters Beach Reserve
Location of main site: Carters Beach; Westport
About the group:
We are a group of volunteers who have a shared vision of improving and restoring the dune system at Carters Beach. We have been successfully working alongside Buller District Council, the 1 Billion Trees Programme, Westreef, Kawatiri Coastal Trail and the West Coast Penguin Trust to improve dune ecology and enhance visitor experience.
- A bund has been built to protect the dunes from the people and the people from the sea.
- Many hundreds of flaxes and other natives have been planted onto the back of the dune system; we continue to apply for funding for more dune appropriate plants.
- Penguin boxes for the little blue penguin populations were donated by Bathurst; and painted by local children - to provide shelter for penguins during moult and breeding seasons; and also to educate the younger generation about the penguins.
- The Reserve itself is also undergoing a makeover - to celebrate the links we have with the sea and the importance of dune protection for the future.
Purpose of group:
Improve dune system and support/encourage local flora and fauna to thrive on this highly modified coastline.
